Nope, it was not pay-back for trying to trick the great Social Media powers.

Nope, it’s not because an evil unicorn cast a spell on my followers and they suddenly woke up hating me.

It was because I made a “heart over head” kind of decision – the ones that land you in trouble but make your soul sing cause you are chasing your passion.

 

I took the risk, I gambled, I faltered. But in the end I won.

I am talking about self-branding.

A Little Bit of Storytelling (PS: I don’t brag about the mansions I built and the Mercedes I bought)

When I entered the world of making money online, I lead with what I was best at. Understanding the value of every dollar and using entrepreneurship to stretch it like silly putty.

I named my brand “SweatyDollar” (*shucks moms. I was green)

Sweaty Dollar blew up far beyond anything I could have imagined (you can still type the brand name in Instagram and see all the lovely imitation accounts!). At one point of time I had over 200K+ Instagram followers to show for my efforts. People loved the advice and the fun.

But I wanted something more. I wanted my social tribe to recognize me. I wanted to be Kevin Charlie. Not the random dude who runs Sweaty Dollar. And most importantly I wanted that real one-to-one, trust based relationship which self branded businesses always seem to have.

So one fine morning, I woke up, drank some coffee, gave myself a pep talk and did it. I made the announcement that Sweaty Dollar would now be Sweaty Kevin…I mean sorry…Kevin Charlie. 😉

I won’t go into the details but one thing led to another and I lost 50K followers shortly (a painful 6 months) after the transition. It was a blow to the stomach. Know that feeling when you painstakingly rustle up a turkey dinner and your guests tell you that they have gone vegan?

It was just like that. It hurt to see the people who had hung on to my every word leave.

But the juice was worth the squeeze. I am glad I self-branded. And here’s why.

 

3 Reasons Why Self Branding Is a Must for Every Successful Blogger:

Don’t get me wrong. When you are starting out, taking on a brand name is A-Okay. In fact it gives you a bit of wriggle room. If something goes wrong, you can ditch the business name and start afresh. You can’t really do that with your own identity. (*Unless you know someone who can get you that fake ID in a jiffy!)

But once you are in the flow and have gotten the hang of things, self branding is the icing on the cake.

The Prism Effect

I stress the concept of authentic voice a lot in my coaching modules and courses. It means writing the way you would talk to a dear friend. That intimacy draws people in! Being authentic is possible even when you are blogging as a brand. But when people see your “face”, they see bits of your personality on your About Page, when they get to know you as a person on social – authenticity goes off the charts.

Self-branded businesses are like prisms. They reflect every aspect of your personality – the reds, the greens and even the mad orange. Nothing stays hidden. And people relate to that instantly

Looking out for the “Future You”

When you are self-branded, you are investing in yourself. And “brand YOU” will stick around as long as you are walking planet earth. Think about it. You are a human being. Five years down the line, you will have a different set of interests. Maybe you will want to sell Yoga pants. Who knows? So if your blog is famous for gluten free pasta recipes, can you really fit Yoga pants in the equation?

Mmmm…maybe yes. But it will seem forced.

Not a problem for self branded bloggers.

They can endorse and be affiliates of niches as diverse as carrot juice and SEO. Because people love them for who they are. And they just happen to be quirky people who loves juices and optimization! It’s all natural and acceptable.

Familiarity Breeds Leverage

When you are self-branded, your calls to action have more impact. People bond better with people. Faces they know and like! So when a self-branded authority asks them to come together – be it to support the blue whales or buy a freshly launched product, that request is personal. It’s hard to deny.

Case in point, blogging wizard Melyssa Griffin had her “biggest income month” only after she switched her branding from The Nectar Collective to Melyssa Griffin. Think about that! And “Kevin Charlie” is no different!

 

Imagine business branding as a pair of training wheels.

They serve a purpose only as long as you are wobbly and don’t have the confidence to fly solo.
