There are a million ways to grow an audience and grow an email list — Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, SEO, etc. — but these all take so much time. What are the options for when you’re trying to scale your audience and your business fast?

Two words: Facebook Groups!

Listen. We all have our needs and wants. We all WANT a huge email list, or chat bot list, or whatever type of customer list they’re called today, right?

I mean, that’s be the dream. 5,000 or 50,000 or 100,000. One day, even 1 MILLION.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

But those numbers seem crazy and far fetched at the beginning, right? You’ve got a few hundred or a couple thousand people on your email list. You’ll never get to 50,000 or even 100,000. At least that’s what you’re thinking.

Let’s stop being debbie downers for a sec and let me give you a little bit of encouragement: every successful person out there you follow started at zero.

Now let’s chat about needs.

We all NEED to discover what is going to work for us. Everyone is different. And what you need to do is find a community you can thrive in.

That’s exactly what I did.

I found a thriving community, which just so happened to be Facebook groups. And I found a way to provide value that would help me build my following.

Facebook groups can be a powerful way for you to grow your business and increase lead generation as well.

There are two main ways to go about this: joining groups centered around your industry or niche, or creating and growing your own Facebook group. Both can be incredibly lucrative, and you can choose if one or the other makes you more comfortable or makes more sense for your business, but I actually recommend using both strategies for maximum results.

Let’s go over all of the ways you can use Facebook groups to generate more leads and grow your email list.

Join Like-Minded Groups

First things first, you want to start your Facebook group strategy by joining groups that align with your business and your interests.

Start by typing your industry into the search bar on Facebook, then narrowing your search results down to Groups.

Then search for a few more specific niches within your industry to find groups related to those as well. Find out if your favorite influencers in your industry have their own Facebook groups you can join.

In your Facebook search results, look through the group names and the number of members in each group. Most of these are closed groups, so you won’t be able to see the types of posts inside until you join.

I recommend joining several at first just to get a feel for Facebook groups and finding the ones that really resonate with you. Get comfortable posting in groups to ask for advice, and commenting on posts when you have tips to offer.

1. Focus on just 2-3 groups.

Although I want you to join a bunch of groups at first, you need to spend time in each one to figure out which ones are for you and which ones aren’t.

Then you can narrow it down to just 2-3 groups that post content that you love, that you can interact with, and that allows you to post as well.

When you’re using this Facebook group strategy, you’re going to be immersing yourself in these groups and being a prominent and active member. By focusing on every group you’ve ever joined, you’re going to wear yourself thin, and you’ll be spending more time on Facebook than working on your business.

That’s not what we want.

This is why we say to just focus on a couple of groups, three at the most. Because you want to be active, but you don’t want to be spending all of your time there.

2. Pay attention to the rules.

Once you pick some groups to join, be sure to stop by the group’s description and make sure you understand all of the rules.

Groups have rules to ensure they don’t get overrun with spam and posts that don’t add value to the group. Businesses owners are creating these groups to create communities around their own businesses, and to keep them in order, rules are necessary.

If you look in the screenshot above, you’ll see that I simply link to my group’s rules in the description. Many groups use this tactic, while other groups simply list out the rules directly in their description.

But regardless of how they’re listed out, be sure to read them, and more importantly, be sure to follow them. If you’re not allowed to post anything promotional about your business at all, ever, that may not be the best group to use in this strategy.

However, a lot of groups will have a day every week or month, or they’ll create a post dedicated to promotional content. Look out for groups like that, because you’re going to want to take advantage of that.

Which brings us to our next point.

3. Keep track of promo days.

Make sure you write down each week or month which days you’re allowed to share your business’s blog content or lead magnets and then do it.

Take full advantage of these promotional days.

If you’re a prominent and active member in these communities, and then people who recognize your name see your content, they’re so much more likely to click through to read it. Because they already know who you are and the type of value you can offer.

Sharing blog content is a great way to get readers and social shares, but when you start sharing your lead magnets, that is how you’re going to get even more leads and subscribers on your email list from these groups.

4. Create real connections with group members.

When you post in these groups, you need to completely stay away from the “How does this benefit ME” mindset. Yes, your end goal is to grow your business and make more money, which is obviously a benefit to you. But how you get there is by being genuine and real and valuable to the other members in this group.

This is how you make real connections and real business contacts and real leads. It’s how you make real change and really solidify your position as a thought leader in your industry. You make people want to buy from you because they can see what you have to offer, because they’re only getting a portion of it for free.

5. Put together a content strategy.

You’re going to be sharing a lot of content in these groups. You want to engage with other posts, but you also want to create your own content to share. Each day you should scroll through each group’s feed and look for posts that you can comment on with advice, support, encouragement, or just saying hey.

Then, each day, you’ll want to create your own post to share within each group as well. There are so many things this can be: a shout out to the group’s admin for something really awesome they did, an inspirational quote, thought-provoking questions for others to answer, sharing your expertise, and when allowed, promotional posts and lead magnets.

You want to create content like this to post in the groups daily so that you’re seen as an active and engaging member of the group.

People will start to recognize your name, they’ll add you as a friend, and when they need what you’re selling, they’ll think about coming to you.

Create Your Own Group

Alright, so you can start by joining groups that make sense for your business. Next step is to start your very own Facebook group full of individuals who want to be associated with your business.

I’ve got an entire post dedicated to creating and growing your own Facebook group, so if you’re just getting started, check out that post first.

Now, we’re going to talk about how to utilize your group to grow your business and generate more leads.

1. Post frequently and consistently.

If you’re an absent group owner, you’re never going to gain anything from owning a Facebook group. You have to have a content strategy for your own Facebook group, just like for the ones you’re an active member in.

However, with your own Facebook group, you get to be a bit more strategic and promotional. After all, it’s your own Facebook group, and the goal is to turn every single member into a customer.

So you’ll post links leading into your sales funnel, you’ll post results, but you’ll also post content just to engage your group members. After all, you want to make friends with all of them. What could possibly be better than a community full of thousands of friends who also want to give you money?

Literally nothing, probably.

And if you’re stuck and have no idea what to post, I share 30 days worth of content ideas in my post about growing your Facebook group. Seriously, go read it now—it’s got so much great info.

2. Include images within your posts.

Hopefully you end up with a seriously awesome Facebook group where people are constantly posting questions and comments and engaging with you and other members. And if that happens, you want to make sure that people are noticing your posts, as the group owner/admin.

A great way to ensure your posts stand out is to include images within them. There are tons of stock photo websites you can browse for content that accompanies your post topic (Unsplash, Pexels, and are just a few of my favorites).

You can also hire a professional photographer to get some good stock photos of you and your own work space for brand strength and to ensure no one else has the same photos.

3. Ask questions to vet members.

Not everyone who requests to join your group are going to be serious about your group and your business. That’s why it’s a great idea to take advantage of the question feature before people can request to join.

Here are the questions I’ve put together that people have to answer while they request to join my group:

1. This is a group of Entrepreneurs who want to make their families a better place to live on the way to 6 figures and beyond. When we help you get success, how will you give back to your family?

2. If you experience exceptional growth as a result of being in our group and you do NOT give the time back to your family… are you okay if we feed you a knuckle sandwich?

3. Want FREE Marketing Hacks That Will 10x Your Business? If so, leave *JUST* Your Email Below With No Other Characters & We'll Send It Over!

Most people who request to join groups they don’t actually care about aren’t going to take the time to answer the questions. But this way you can also read the answers to double check that your goals line up and they make sense for your community.

4. Use GroupFunnels to automate your email list growth.

Did you notice how the third question I have in my Facebook group asks for people to leave JUST their email address and nothing else? It’s because I utilize this seriously awesome tool called GroupFunnels to add my group members directly to my email list.

First of all, GroupFunnels makes it extremely easy to approve requests to join your group. Instead of going through requests one by one to filter them out, it integrates with your group in a way that allows you to go through and approve all requests at once.

Boom, fifteen new group members at the click of a button!

But the best part?

You can create a question that asks users what their email address is (and ONLY their email address), and create a zap using Zapier that automatically adds that new member to your email list.

So now every time you have a new member join and leave their email address, you’re able to grow your email list at about the same rate that you grow your Facebook group.

Now, is that genius, or is it genius?

Yep. It’s genius.

Now get started growing your email list! And don’t forget to check out this blog post on growing your Facebook group.
